Stadiums of World Cup 1986
Mexico were host to the thirteenth World Cup finals in 1986. It was won by Argentina, who defeated West Germany 3 - 2 at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City.
World Cup 1986 should have been held in Colombia. However, economic reasons led to the Colombians pulling out as host in 1982. Mexico were selected in the following year to host the competition.
British representation was provided by Scotland, England and Northern Ireland. For them perhaps, the most memorable moment of the whole event was the "Hand of God", when Argentina's Diego Maradona scored an illegal goal against England. The ball was punched into the goal, but the referee failed to notice the handball.
In September 1985, eight months before the tournament, Mexico was struck by a severe earthquake. Although this cast doubt over the country's ability to organize the event, none of the stadia were damaged and the decision was given to continue with the preparations.
