Designed for other events, the Mordovia Arena in Saransk was renovated for the World Cup in 2018. Although extended to have enough seats for 45,000 fans, after the World Cup was finished the top tier of seats were removed, reducing the capacity to 28,000. It was then used to host local team FC Mordovia Saransk.
Construction: Built between 2010 and 2012 to host important local events includng Spartakiad, renovations were made between 2015 and 2018 to improve the stadium and increase capacity.
